These five federal fraud and abuse laws are important for physical therapists to know:

  1. The False Claims Act
  2. The Anti-Kickback Statute
  3. The Physician Self-Referral Law, also called the Stark Law
  4. The Exclusion Authorities
  5. The Civil Monetary Penalties Law

In addition to the federal fraud and abuse laws, many states have established their own fraud and abuse laws, which govern billing relationships with private payers. Familiarize yourself with your state laws and with requirements placed on you by any contract you sign with a payer, such as an insurance company or Medicaid program.
