Picture this: You have a split second to decide to shoot or not to shoot — a window of opportunity through the trees as you are trying to catch your breath after just playing a stalk-and-bugle game over a mile and a half of wooded, hilly terrain. (Stalk-and-bugle is a hunting tactic using a device to mimic a female or male animal noise to elicit a response from the supposed animal’s potential mate.) You have put all your trust and money in the ability of your guide, who whispers that based on the raspiness of the voice of the animal and how hard it has been calling to cows, it is an older bull elk.
