The John H.P. Maley Clinical Impact Lectureship Award acknowledges and honors a physical therapist who has made a significant contribution to the profession in clinical practice. (This was previously known as the John H.P. Maley Lecture Award.)
Eligibility Requirements
Nominees must be physical therapists who are current members in good standing of the association.
Criteria for Selection
Nominees must demonstrate:
- A recognized and significant contribution to physical therapy in clinical practice
- Acknowledged skills in the organization and presentation of written or oral communications and the ability to present a worthy lecture
A strong application should demonstrate the following:
A track record and sustained contributions in any area of clinical practice.
- Wide-reaching effects of contributions, as evidenced in the quality and diversity of the support statements received.
- Previous recognition of contributions, as demonstrated by other awards and honors documented in the nominee's curriculum vitae.
- Professional public visibility of contributions, as demonstrated by publications, presentations, invited lectures, appointed and elected positions held, and other information in the nominee's curriculum vitae.
- Sustained and continuous contributions in an area of clinical practice as documented in the support statements and in the nominee's curriculum vitae.
- Qualitative effects of contributions in an area of clinical practice as documented in the support statements.
- Enduring quality of contributions or potential for continuing effects of contributions on the physical therapy profession.
Ability to present a noteworthy lecture.
- Acknowledged skills in the organization and presentation of written or oral communications, as documented in the support statements and the nominee's curriculum vitae
Support statements that are positive, cite specific examples of professional accomplishments, and provide additional information on depth, scope, and quality in a convincing manner.
Recipient Responsibilities
The John H.P. Maley Clinical Leadership Lectureship Award recipient is required to deliver a lecture at a general session during an APTA national event. The lecture should not be more than 45 minutes in length, and as each learning event offered by APTA meets high standards of quality, the lecturer is required to submit to APTA a lecture description, measurable learning objectives, a bibliography of reference materials (at least five references no older than 10 years), and a brief biography. The content of the lecture shall be related to any aspect of clinical practice and shall address ideas that promote physical therapy. The lecture may not promote the lecturer's personal products, services, or personal beliefs on topics outside of those related to the practice of physical therapy. The recipient will be assigned an APTA staff liaison to provide information on the context of the lecture and manage preconference arrangements and on-site lecture logistics.
What Recipients Receive
The John H.P. Maley Clinical Leadership Lectureship Award recipient will be introduced by the son of John H.P. Maley and will receive a certificate of recognition at the time of the lecture. The recipient also receives an honorarium; reimbursement of up to two days of travel and accommodation expenses incurred by the recipient in conjunction with travel for the purpose of delivering the lecture; and complimentary registration to an APTA national event where the recipient presents the lecture.
Submission Requirements
Nomination or self-nomination statement must be submitted to begin the process.
The following must be submitted by the nominee:
- Current curriculum vitae or resume of the nominee
- Completed online application
- Three support statements obtained from the following:
- Individuals who can specifically address one or more of the criteria for selection.

The nominations call for the Honors & Awards program is open from Sept. 1 to Dec. 1. Nominations must be submitted through our online platform by Dec. 1; late submissions will not be considered. Selected recipients and their nominators will be notified in May.
