Overview

Hypertension is a common cardiovascular condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality. As primary care and specialty clinicians who manage patients with hypertension, PTs are well positioned to help prevent, detect, and manage high blood pressure in adults.

This updated collaborative guideline, from the American Heart Association and others, replaces the 2017 version and provides current evidence and recommendations for all clinicians, including physical therapists. PTs may be especially interested in the checklist for accurate office blood pressure measurement (Figure 3) and in the lifestyle and psychosocial approaches to prevention and management (Sections 4 and 5).
